Desk Pad Size Guide: How to Pick the Right Size
The right desk pad size depends on your desk width and on what you do in front of it. Measure the desk, then the working zone you use for a keyboard, laptop or notebook. Choose the largest pad that covers that zone and still leaves room beside it for the pieces you use every day.
Our desk pads come in two sizes, 34 × 48 cm (about 13.4 × 18.9 in) and 38 × 58 cm (about 15.0 × 22.8 in). This guide shows how to measure, how much space common tasks need, and which of the two sizes suits your desk.
How to measure your desk
Five minutes with a tape measure saves a lot of guesswork. Use whichever unit you like, but write the numbers down.
- Width: measure the desktop from the left edge to the right edge.
- Depth: measure from the front edge to the back edge, or to the wall if the desk stands against one.
- Fixed items: note anything that stays put, such as a monitor base, a lamp, speakers or a printer, and subtract the space they take.
- Your seat: mark where the center of your chair sits. The pad should be centered on you, which is not always the center of the desk.
- Front clearance: measure from the front edge of the desk to the nearest fixed item behind it, such as a monitor stand. This is the depth a pad can actually use.
Find your working zone
Your working zone is the area you can use without leaning or stretching, roughly the space your forearms sweep while your elbows stay close to your body. The pad should cover this zone, because that is where your hands, wrists and paper spend the day. Space beyond it is better used for accessories.
Keyboard and mouse
Measure the width of your keyboard and add the space your mouse moves in. If both live on the pad, the pad needs to be wider than the keyboard by at least that mouse area. A full-size keyboard with a mouse beside it is a good reason to consider a large desk pad. If you prefer a separate surface for the mouse, some of our sets include a matching mouse pad.
Laptop
Measure the width of the laptop and its depth with the lid open. On a smaller pad, a laptop takes up much of the surface, so think about where your notebook or mouse will go. Anything that does not fit on the pad can sit beside it on the desk.
Notebook and paper
Paper is easy to plan for. A US letter sheet is 21.6 × 27.9 cm (8.5 × 11 in), and an A5 notebook is 14.8 × 21 cm (about 5.8 × 8.3 in). With the long side facing you, even an open letter-size notebook, about 43 × 28 cm (17 × 11 in), fits within the 48 cm (about 18.9 in) width and 34 cm (about 13.4 in) depth of our smaller pad. If you write and type in the same session, though, you will want room for both, which points toward the larger size.
Our two desk pad sizes
When you compare desk pad dimensions, read the first number as the depth and the second as the width, with the long side facing you.
- 34 × 48 cm (about 13.4 × 18.9 in): used by 113 of our sets, including every compact set. It suits laptop work, handwriting and smaller desks, and it leaves more of the desktop free for trays and holders. The Luna 4-piece set ($90) is a simple example: desk pad, memo holder, pen cup and coaster.
- 38 × 58 cm (about 15.0 × 22.8 in): used by 37 of our sets. It is 10 cm (about 3.9 in) wider and 4 cm (about 1.6 in) deeper, which adds about a third more surface. It gives more room for a keyboard and mouse, or a laptop with a notebook beside it, on a wider desk. The Star 14-piece set ($400) uses this pad.
How to choose a desk pad size by desk width
Use your desk width as the starting point, then adjust for what you do on the pad.

Depth matters too. Our pads are 34 cm (about 13.4 in) or 38 cm (about 15.0 in) deep. If the front clearance you measured is shorter than that, the pad will run into your monitor stand, so choose the smaller pad or move the monitor back.
Leave room for trays and other pieces
A pad is only one part of the layout. Sets with a two-tier document tray, a desk clock or a tissue holder need space beside or behind the pad, and those pieces are easiest to use when they sit just outside your working zone. Before you order, measure the free space on each side of where the pad will go.
A quick test helps. Mark the outline of the pad on your desk with painter's tape, or cut a sheet of newspaper to 34 × 48 cm or 38 × 58 cm, and work with it for a day. You will soon see whether your hands stay on it and whether the space around it is enough.
