What Is a Desk Set? Every Piece, Explained
A desk set is a group of matching desk accessories, usually built around a desk pad. Around the pad sit smaller pieces such as a pen cup, a memo holder and a coaster, while larger sets add document trays, a clock or a personalized nameplate. Our sets come with anywhere from 4 to 15 pieces.
A product title tells you how many pieces are in a set, but not always what each piece is for. This glossary covers every piece that appears in our listings, explains how pieces are counted and shows how compact and executive sets differ, so you can read a piece list and picture it on your own desk.
What a matching set does for your desk
Accessories bought one at a time often end up in different colors, heights and finishes. A matching set settles that in one step: the pad, the pen cup and the trays are chosen to go together, so even a busy desk looks calm.
A set also gives every small thing a home. Pens go in the cup, notes in the memo holder, cards in the card holder and papers in the tray. That is the same job a desk organizer set or a desk accessories set does, which is why the terms are often used for the same thing. An office desk set does quiet work with visitors, too: a nameplate and a business card holder at the front of the desk tell people who you are before you say a word.

Start with the desk pad
Everything else is arranged around the pad, so it deserves a closer look. Ours come in two sizes: 34 × 48 cm (about 13.4 × 18.9 in) and 38 × 58 cm (about 15.0 × 22.8 in). Other pieces you will see in listings
- Single document tray: one tray instead of two, for a lighter flow of paper.
- Mouse pad: a matching surface for your mouse, placed beside the desk pad.
- Large desk clock: a bigger version of the desk clock, suited to a wide desk.
- Pen cup with integrated clock: pen storage and a clock in one piece, which saves space.
- Clock attached to the nameplate: your name and the time share one piece at the front of the desk.
- Two-pen stand: holds two pens upright, ready to pick up.
- Paperclip holder: a small container that stops clips from spreading across the desk.
- A5 notepad holder: a holder for an A5 notepad, which measures 14.8 × 21 cm (about 5.8 × 8.3 in).
- Desk flag with pole: a small flag on a pole. Some sets let you choose none, one or two flags.
How pieces are counted
We count every item, not every type of item. Two ballpoint pens count as 2 pieces, and three coasters count as 3. Take the Vega 9-piece set: desk pad, phone stand, memo holder, pen cup, 3 × coasters, calendar holder and business card holder. That is seven different items and nine pieces in total.
The same rule applies across the catalog, where sets come with 4, 5, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 or 15 pieces. When you compare two sets, read the piece list rather than the number alone. A higher count can come from extra coasters or pens, while a set with a lower count may include the one piece you really need, such as a two-tier tray.
Compact vs executive sets at a glance
Our catalog splits into two groups by piece count.
- Compact sets, 4 to 9 pieces: 48 sets, all on the 34 × 48 cm (about 13.4 × 18.9 in) pad. The Luna 4-piece set ($90) has a desk pad, memo holder, pen cup and coaster. The Vega 9-piece set ($100) has a desk pad, memo holder and pen cup too, then adds a phone stand, three coasters instead of one, a calendar holder and a business card holder. Frequently asked
Is a desk set the same as a desk organizer set?
The two overlap. An organizer set focuses on storage, such as trays, cups and holders. A desk set usually adds a desk pad that ties the pieces together, and every example set above includes one.
Do all sets include a nameplate?
No. Of our 152 sets, 116 include a nameplate personalized with a name and a title, printed on a metal plate. The piece list on each product page shows whether a personalized nameplate base is part of the set.
What are the pieces made of?
Of our 152 sets, 148 are faux leather. The four Prestige sets are wood veneer with faux leather components. Many sets also have velvet-lined storage interiors.
