Each set above is sold complete: a desk pad and matching black office desk accessories in one finish. The sets differ in that finish, piece count, material and nameplate.

Compact and executive sets in black

The black compact desk sets, four to nine pieces, are the Luna 4, 5, 8 and 9, the Vega 4 and 9 and the 5-Piece Genuine Leather Desk Set. All use the 13.4 × 18.9 in (34 × 48 cm) pad, and each has a pen cup and a memo holder, so even a four-piece set works as a black desk organizer set.

A black executive desk set has ten pieces or more. Most add a document tray and a phone stand, and some add desk flags. The Star 14, Elegance 11 and 12, Prestige 14 and Chester sets have a clock; clock batteries are not included. Piece count does not decide the pad: the Star, Elegance, Pulsar, Prestige and Chester sets and the 17-piece set use the 15.0 × 22.8 in (38 × 58 cm) pad, and every other black set uses the smaller one. Materials

Most black sets are faux leather, a man-made material with a leather-look surface. The Prestige 14 combines wood veneer, a thin layer of real wood, with faux leather components; it is not solid wood. Gold or silver plate on black

Most black sets include a personalized nameplate; the table shows which. The name and optional title are printed on a metal plate, not engraved, and you choose gold or silver. Our desk set color guide says black takes either plate and suggests matching the other metals near the desk, such as a lamp base or door handles. Black on light and dark desks

The same guide says black looks formal and works with nearly every desk finish, from white laminate to dark wood. On a light desk the pad stands out and frames your working area; on a dark desk it blends in. In a dim room a large dark pad can feel heavy.

Brown and gray alternatives

Brown desk sets feel warmer and pair naturally with wood; most families on this page come in brown too. Gray desk sets are a lighter choice for modern rooms.
