Desk Organizer Sets: What Is in One and How to Choose

A desk organizer set is a group of separate, matching organizers bought together: a pen cup, a memo holder, a business card holder, a phone stand and, in larger sets, a document tray. It does the work of a one-piece desk organizer or desk caddy, except that each piece stands where you use it. Our matching desk sets are organizer sets built around a desk pad.

This guide explains how a set differs from a single desktop organizer, what one contains, how many pieces your desk needs and how to choose.

Desk organizer, desktop organizer, desk caddy or organizer set

The names overlap, so separate them before you buy.

  • Desk organizer or desktop organizer: usually a single unit with several compartments, sometimes with a drawer or a shelf. Everything sits in one block.
  • Desk caddy: usually the smallest form of the same idea, one container with a few compartments, often light enough to carry from room to room.
  • Desk organizer set: several separate pieces in one color and one finish, each with a single job. The pen cup can stand by your writing hand, the tray at the back and the card holder at the front.

No form is better for every desk. A one-piece organizer takes one footprint and moves in one go, which suits a shared desk or a surface that has to be cleared every evening. A set uses more of the surface, but each thing sits where you reach for it, and the pieces match. Everything we sell is a set of this kind: separate matching pieces, sold as ready-made sets or one piece at a time.

What a desk organizer set contains

These are the storage pieces in our sets, named as on the product pages:

  • Pen cup: holds pens, pencils and scissors upright. It is in every set, and the Elegance sets build a clock into it.
  • Memo holder: keeps note paper within reach. It is in every set except the Prestige sets, where an A5 notepad holder takes its place. Paper is not included.
  • Business card holder: keeps your cards ready for a visitor. Most sets of five pieces or more have one; the four-piece sets do not.
  • Phone stand: holds the phone upright with the screen in view. Most executive sets and some compact sets have one.
  • Document tray: holds loose paper, as a single tray or a two-tier tray. Most executive sets have one, and no compact set does.
  • Smaller holders: some sets add a paperclip holder, a calendar holder or a tissue holder.

The desk pad is what turns these into a desk set. Every one of our sets includes one, and the other pieces are arranged around it. Most sets add a personalized nameplate, and nearly all add at least one coaster.

The piece count includes all of these, and the pens and coasters too: two ballpoint pens add two to the total, and three coasters add three. A higher number does not mean more storage: the Vega 12-piece set has no document tray, while both Luna 10-piece sets have one. Count the organizers in the list of contents, not the pieces in the title. The desk set glossary describes each piece.

How many pieces you need, by desk type

Start from the desk, not from the set, because an organizer with no daily job only takes up surface. Three common cases:

Desk organizer pieces by desk type
Desk What needs a home Organizers to look for Set size
Small desk or laptop desk Pens, notes, a drink, sometimes cards or the phone Pen cup, memo holder, coaster; a business card holder or phone stand if you use one Compact: four to nine pieces
Paper-heavy desk Mail, files to sign, printouts, clips Document tray, pen cup, memo holder, paperclip holder Executive: ten pieces or more
Client-facing desk Your cards, your name, a visitor’s drink Business card holder, personalized nameplate, three coasters; a tray if paper crosses the desk too Executive, or a compact set with a nameplate

For the first row, look at the compact desk sets, all on the 13.4 × 18.9 in (34 × 48 cm) desk pad and none with a tray. For the other two, start with the executive desk sets. An executive desk organizer set does not have to be large: executive sets come with either pad size, and some, such as the Venus and Vesta sets, have no tray.

Materials: faux leather, wood veneer and genuine leather

If you want a leather-look desk organizer set, read the material line on the product page first. Most of our range is faux leather: a man-made material with a leather-look surface, not genuine leather. These sets are gathered under faux leather desk sets.

A few sets are different. The Prestige sets, listed under wood veneer desk sets, combine wood veneer with faux leather components; the veneer is a thin layer of real wood, not solid wood. The 17-Piece Executive Desk Set and the 5-Piece Genuine Leather Desk Set are genuine leather, and the Vesta sets are wood and faux leather.

Inside, the storage pieces of the Luna, Cloud, Star and Elegance sets are velvet-lined, and those of the Vega, Galaxy, Venus, Pulsar and Chester sets are lined with faux leather. Materials and care explains each material name.

How to choose a desk organizer set

  1. Measure the free surface. The desk pad is 13.4 × 18.9 in (34 × 48 cm) or 15.0 × 22.8 in (38 × 58 cm), depending on the set. Leave room beside it for the trays and holders. The desk pad size guide shows how to measure.
  2. List what lives on the desk. Pens, notes, cards, phone, paper, clips: each line needs one organizer, and a piece that answers no line can be left out.
  3. Decide on the tray. If no loose paper reaches the desk, skip the tray. One pile needs a single document tray; paper that comes in and goes out needs a two-tier tray. The Luna 10-piece set and the Star 11-piece set each come in a single-tray and a two-tier version.
  4. Check what is not included. Each product page lists every piece with its quantity. Paper, calendar sheets and clock batteries are not included.
  5. Compare two or three sets. Mark up to three sets with “Compare” and open the comparison page. It puts their price, piece count, desk pad, material, nameplate, colors and contents side by side.

For a need-it or skip-it test on every piece, use the office desk accessories checklist.

Four desk organizer sets and what each one solves

  • A small desk where you hand out cards: the Luna 5-piece set ($125) is a desk pad, pen cup, memo holder, business card holder and coaster in faux leather, on the smaller pad. It has no nameplate, so there is nothing to personalize.
  • A paper-heavy desk without a nameplate: the Cloud 10-piece set ($225) adds a two-tier document tray, a phone stand and a two-pen stand with two ballpoint pens to the pad, pen cup, memo holder, business card holder and coaster. It is an executive set on the smaller pad.
  • A client-facing desk with little paper: the Vega 12-piece set with nameplate ($200) has a business card holder, a personalized nameplate base with two ballpoint pens and three coasters, plus a pen cup, memo holder, calendar holder and phone stand on the smaller pad. It has no document tray.
  • A large desk that takes paper and visitors: the Prestige 14-piece set with clock ($500) is wood veneer with faux leather components on the larger pad: two-tier document tray, pen cup, A5 notepad holder, business card holder, phone stand, tissue holder, personalized nameplate base with two ballpoint pens, large desk clock and three coasters. The clock battery is not included.

When one organizer is enough

A set is the wrong purchase when you need one thing: a pen cup for a desk that already has a pad, a second tray, a phone stand. Our pieces are also sold one at a time through Build Your Desk Set: choose a model, add the piece and pick a color. There is no minimum, and each piece shows its own price in the tool. Desk accessories by the piece lists which models offer a pen cup, a document tray, a business card holder or a phone stand.

The same route works if you want the organizers without a desk pad. All pieces in one built set come from the same model in the same color, so they match.

Frequently asked

Can I get a desk organizer set with a name plate?

Yes. Most of our sets include a personalized nameplate, with a name and an optional title printed on a gold or silver metal plate. They are listed under desk sets with a personalized nameplate; to order a name plate without a set, see personalized desk name plates.

Which colors do the sets come in?

Black and brown are offered on the most sets; see the black desk sets. The Luna sets add brighter colors such as pink, turquoise and orange. For a pink desk organizer set, start with the pink desk sets; for turquoise, with the turquoise desk sets.

Once the set is on your desk

An organizer set works when each piece has a fixed place. Our guide on how to organize your desk covers that step: reach zones, a paper flow for the trays and a five-minute reset at the end of the day. For single fixes to pick from, such as one pile of paper or a small desk, see our desk organization ideas. To see the whole range, browse all desk sets.
