Pen Holders for a Desk: Pen Cup, Pen Stand or Nameplate with Pens
A pen holder for a desk sounds like the simplest purchase there is, yet the term covers three different pieces that do different jobs. A pen cup holds whatever you drop into it. A pen stand holds two pens, each in its own place. A nameplate base with pens puts a pen where a visitor can reach it. This guide explains which one your desk needs and shows where each appears in our range.
Three kinds of pen holder
| Piece | What it holds | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Pen cup | Pens, pencils, scissors | The tools you use yourself, all day |
| Pen stand | Two pens, each in its own place | A signing pen kept ready, for you or a visitor |
| Nameplate with pens | The pens that come with the nameplate base | A desk where visitors sign across from you |
Many desks use two of the three: a cup on the user's side for working tools, and a stand or nameplate toward the front for the pen that gets handed over.
The pen cup
A pen cup is an open, upright container. It is forgiving: anything roughly pen-shaped goes in, and you can see at a glance what you have. Every ready-made set in our range includes one, and on the Elegance sets the cup also carries a clock; the Elegance 11-Piece Desk Set lists it as a pen cup with integrated clock. Clock batteries are not included.
Using a cup well
- Limit what lives in it. A cup holds more than you need. Keep the pens you use this week, one pencil and one highlighter; the rest go in a drawer.
- Test and discard. Dead pens collect in cups. Once a month, try each one and throw out the failures.
- Keep sharp points down. Scissors and letter openers go in blades down, and stay off the desk pad when not in use.
The pen stand
A pen stand gives two pens a place each. It is less about capacity and more about readiness: the pen is always in the same spot and always the same pen. A few of our ready-made sets include one in addition to a cup.
- The Cloud 10-Piece Desk Set has a two-pen stand and two ballpoint pens. The Cloud sets have no nameplate, so the stand takes its place at the front of the desk.
- The 5-Piece Genuine Leather Desk Set has a two-pen stand with two pens beside its pen cup.
The 17-Piece Executive Desk Set also includes a pen stand along with two ballpoint pens.
A nameplate with pens
On most sets that include a personalized nameplate, the nameplate base comes with two ballpoint pens. That makes the front edge of the desk a signing station: the visitor sees the name and finds a pen in the same place. A personalized desk name plate with its pens can also be ordered on its own. The plate takes a name of up to 32 characters and an optional title of up to 36, printed on a metal plate.
The sets without a nameplate and without a pen stand, such as the four- and five-piece Luna sets and the four- and nine-piece Vega sets, include a pen cup but no pens.
Which one does your desk need?
- You write and annotate all day: a pen cup, on your writing-hand side.
- Clients sign documents at your desk: a nameplate with pens or a pen stand at the front, and a cup on your side for your own tools.
- You use one good pen and little else: a stand. A cup for one pen is an empty cup.
- The desk is shared or small: a cup only. It is the piece that travels and holds the most.
Placement: your side and the visitor's side
- The cup: beside the top corner of the desk pad on your writing-hand side, within reach without leaning.
- The stand or nameplate: toward the front edge, where a visitor can take a pen without reaching over your work.
- Not behind the monitor. A pen you have to look for is a pen you will replace with whichever one is nearer.

Ordering a pen holder on its own
Single pieces are sold through Build Your Desk Set: choose a model, add only the piece you want, then pick a color.
- Pen Cup is offered on nearly every model. On Elegance the piece is the Pen Cup with Integrated Clock.
- Two-Pen Stand with Two Pens is a Cloud piece.
- Pen Stand with Two Pens is a Genesis piece. Genesis is our genuine leather model, and its nameplate comes without pens because the stand carries them.
- Nameplate pieces with pens are offered on most models that have a nameplate.
Each piece shows its own price in the tool, and there is no minimum. What each model offers is set out on the page about desk accessories by the piece.
Two things the product pages leave open
- Dimensions. We do not list the height or opening of the cup, so we cannot say whether an unusually long or thick pen fits.
- Ink and refills. The pens are described as ballpoint pens. The ink color and refill type are not stated on the product pages.
If either matters for your order, ask us through the contact page first.
Pen holder questions
Is a pen cup the same as a pencil cup?
Yes. Pen cup, pencil cup and pen pot are names for the same open container.
Does every desk set come with pens?
No. Sets with a nameplate base or a pen stand list their pens under What's included. Sets with only a pen cup do not include pens.
What lines the inside of the pen cup?
It depends on the family. Where the interior is confirmed, the product page lists it under Specifications: velvet-lined for some families, lined with faux leather for others.
