PhD graduation gifts mark the end of years of work and the start of a title. That title is what makes a desk name plate such a fitting gift: for many new doctors it is the first object that says "Dr." in print. This guide covers how to word the plate correctly, what kind of desk a new PhD is likely to have, and how a lab or a class can thank a professor.

Why a nameplate suits this moment

A doctorate changes how a person is addressed, on a door, in an email signature, on a syllabus. A plate for the desk makes that change visible on the first day in a new office. A personalized desk name plate can be ordered on its own, so the gift works whether the graduate ends up at a large faculty desk or a shared one.

"Dr." or "PhD": how to word the plate

The convention is to use one or the other, never both. "Dr." goes before the name; the degree letters go after it.

  • "Dr. Lena Park"
  • "Lena Park, PhD"

Do not combine the two on one line. Which form to choose is personal and varies by field and workplace. Ask the graduate, or look at how their department lists its faculty.

Both forms fit easily within the 32 characters of the name line. Periods and commas can be printed, so "Ph.D." works as well as "PhD"; follow the graduate's own usage. The same applies to other doctorates such as EdD, DBA or PsyD. The optional second line holds up to 36 characters. Some formats that fit:

  • "Assistant Professor of Physics"
  • "Postdoctoral Fellow"
  • "Department of History"

Whatever you type is what gets printed on the metal plate, so settle the wording first. Our guide to what to put on a desk nameplate covers credentials in more detail.

Do not print the title too early

The degree is not always official on the day of the defense. If you are giving at the defense itself, check with the graduate that they are comfortable with the title on the plate, or give it at the graduation ceremony instead. If the job title for the second line is not settled, leave the line empty; a name with the degree is complete on its own.

What desk will a new PhD have?

Gift scale by the kind of desk a new PhD will have
Next step Likely desk What fits
Postdoc or research post A desk in a shared office or beside a lab A nameplate, or a few pieces
Faculty appointment An office where students come to office hours A set with a nameplate
Industry Unknown until the first day A compact set in a neutral color
Still deciding The desk at home A compact set or a nameplate

For an industry job, the advice in our guide to new job gifts applies: choose for a desk you have not seen. Every set in compact desk sets uses the smaller desk pad, 13.4 × 18.9 in (34 × 48 cm).

Desk sets for an academic office

An academic desk is a writing and reading surface with paper on it: drafts, exams, forms, books open face down. The desk pad in a set is for writing, and the other pieces give the small things a place.

  • The Vega 12-Piece Desk Set with Nameplate ($200) has a desk pad, a pen cup, a memo holder, a calendar holder, a business card holder, a phone stand, a nameplate base with two pens and three coasters. Three coasters suit an office where students and colleagues sit down with a cup.
  • The Luna 10-Piece Desk Set with Single Tray ($200) has a single document tray for papers waiting to be graded, with a business card holder, a phone stand, a nameplate base with two pens and one coaster.
  • The Luna 8-Piece Desk Set with Nameplate ($150) is the compact choice for a first, smaller office.

Paper and calendar sheets are not included with any set. All sets that carry a plate are in desk sets with a nameplate.

Gifts for professors

Students thank professors at a few predictable moments: after a defense, at graduation, when a long-serving advisor retires. Two principles keep it comfortable for both sides.

  • Wait until grades and decisions are done. A gift before a grade, a recommendation or a defense puts the professor in an awkward position. Afterwards it is simply thanks.
  • Give as a group and keep it modest. A lab, a cohort or a seminar class giving one thing together is easier to accept than a gift from one student. Check whether your university has a gift policy; if it does, it decides the limit.

From a graduating advisee, a nameplate or one desk piece with a handwritten note is enough. From a lab marking an advisor's milestone, a matching set with the advisor's name and title is a shared gift that stays in the office students visit.

Timing

  1. The defense: a card, and the gift if the wording is agreed.
  2. The graduation ceremony: the natural day for a plate that says "Dr."
  3. The first day of an appointment: the right time if the second line should carry the new title.

Order ahead of whichever day you choose; the shipping policy gives estimates, not delivery dates. If you find a mistake in the text after ordering, tell us right away: we can change it until the order has shipped, and not after.

PhD gift questions

Is "Dr." correct for a PhD, or only for physicians?

Yes. People with a research doctorate such as a PhD are commonly addressed as Dr. in academic and professional settings; follow the graduate's own usage. If you are buying for a physician, see our guide to gifts for doctors, which covers MD and DO wording.

Should the plate include the field of study?

Only as part of a title or department line, such as "Department of History". The degree letters alone do not need a subject after them.
